So what exactly is a Toyger?
Ever wished you could have a tiger in your living room… but without the danger (or the size)? That’s exactly what the Toyger is all about!
The name says it all: Toyger = toy tiger. These cats are domestic through and through, but their bold stripes and golden coats give them that wild, jungle-cat vibe. Think of them as a little slice of tiger magic, wrapped up in a sweet, loving, family-friendly pet.
Where Did They Come From?
The Toyger is a fairly new breed, first dreamed up in the late 1980s by breeder Judy Sugden in the United States. She noticed some unusual markings on one of her cats and thought, “What if I could create a cat that looked just like a tiny tiger?”
Fast forward: with a lot of dedication (and some help from Bengals and even a special cat from India), the Toyger was born.

1993: Accepted for registration with TICA.

What Do Toygers Look Like?
If you’ve ever seen a Toyger walk across the room, you’ll know why people stop and stare.

What Are They Like to Live With?
Here’s the best part: while they look fierce, they’re actually total sweethearts.
Family cats. They adore kids and usually get along well with other pets.
Clever. Toygers love learning tricks — some even fetch, sit, or walk happily on a harness.
Playful. They need entertainment, so bring on the climbing trees, puzzle toys, and games of chase.
Cuddly. After a good play session, they’re more than happy to curl up on the couch with you.
Water curious. Many Toygers don’t mind water and will happily dip a paw in the sink or watch the shower run.
